Information about Standardized Tests

PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test)
The PSAT is primarily for college-bound sophomores and juniors. It gives students practice at taking the SAT. A fully detailed score report allows students to assess their strengths and weaknesses.

FCAT (Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test)

This test is given in March to all 10th graders. Beginning with the class that entered high school in 1999-2000. Students must receive a passing score in both reading and math to graduate high school. Passing scores have not yet been determined. Students who do not achieve a passing score in one or more sections will be targeted for remediation and will have five more opportunities to pass before graduation.

FCAT RETAKES

FCAT retake test is given in October. Students who took FCAT in March and failed one or both sections, as well as 11th and 12th graders who have never taken the test will be tested. Any student who still does not pass can retest in March.

SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) and
ACT (American College Test)

These optional tests are offered off-campus several Saturday mornings during the year to college-bound students. SAT covers math and verbal reasoning. ACT covers, math, English, science and reading. Colleges use students' tests results for admission purposes. Guidance recommends students take the test initially during the spring of their junior year. Applications are available in the Guidance Department. A fee is required.

HSCT (High School Competency Test)
HSCT is given to seniors who began high school in the 1998-1999 school year or earlier. A passing score is required for graduation. Test will be given again in January and in March. Students failing to pass will receive a Certificate of Competition instead of a Diploma.

ACT PLAN
This plan is given to all 10th graders. Students will complete the assessment during biology class. This  assessment tool provides students, parents and counselors with information that can be used to plan for future academic and career success The cost of this test is funded by the Florida Legislature.

ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery)
ASVAB is given November 5 during school hours. This career exploration test is given to juniors and seniors. A student does not have to plan to enter the military. This test examines how one's aptitudes and abilities correspond to careers. Assessment takes three hours and is followed with several weeks later with a detailed evaluation tailored to each individual student.
