Victoria Selby was elected in September as Hernando County’s first Student Representative on the School Board. She is currently a senior at Springstead High School and hopes to attend the University of Florida next fall to receive her Bachelor of Arts Degree in History. She has helped out in the community for many years and has held many leadership positions at her high school. Miss Selby looks forward to the opportunity to make this year great and to continue helping the community through this new position.
News:

The Anti-Bullying Week will be taking place the week of April 9th-13th. Below is a flyer with the contest rules that go along with this week. The Superintendent's Student Advisory Council Delegates are very excited to present this to all students in Hernando County to show the continued support to end this issue.
On 11/15/11, the Board of County Commissioners voted to eliminate impact fees for one year. This decision will affect all students in Hernando county because there will be no money in the budget to do any form of school renovations this year. The Board of County Commissioners implemented this change unexpectedly. I'm looking for your support in this matter to inform the County Commissioners how you feel on this issue.
November 4, 2011The IB program at Springstead High School was defined to be a 2 year pre-IB program followed by a two year IB program. This allows students to place special attendance requests in order to attend Springstead for the IB program. However, if a student drops from the program at any time and they are not zoned for Springstead, they will not be able to remain at Springstead and will be placed back at their home zoned school.
Concerning the discussion on magnet schools:
-Partial zoning for Challenger K8 and Chocachatti Elementary has been set for consideration at a later date.
-Nature Coast Technical High School will be partially zoned for the 2012-2013 school year.
-For Challenger K8 and Chocachatti Elementary, the application process will stay at 70% portfolio and 30% lottery for the 2012-2013 school year. (Note: the school board voted 11/02/2011 to make the process 70% lottery, 30% portfolio for the upcoming 2012-2013 school year).
-Two ideas emerged from the school board discussion that could help with the magnet school debate:
1. Mr. Foreman proposed that every student in Hernando County be entered into the lottery for Challenger K8 and Chocachatti Elementary. That way every student is given the opportunity to enroll at these schools and they can decline if they are selected to attend one of the schools.
2. Many of the school board members felt that magnet programs or specialized programs can be integrated into all of the schools in the county.
This section is dedicated to inform students about the different methods of communication they can take advantage of so that their voices and opinions are heard by the school board.
November 4, 2011 Suggestion boxes are at almost every school in the district, currently. They are either located in the media center or in the front office. All students are encouraged to take advantage of these boxes. Every concern will be read every other week and will be brought before the School Board.
There is an email address and phone number listed on the main page that can be used to contact me at any time. I am trying to set up a schedule to come and visit schools on a regular basis so that I am able to learn about student concerns and ideas, as well as get to know each school individually.
