Happy February, Bear Cub Families!
I can’t believe we are halfway through the third marking quarter! Please make sure you reiterate how important it is for students to show their Pine Grove PRIDE and follow school-wide rules and expectations on a daily basis. Classes are getting ready for end of the year events and we want all students to participate in grade-level field trips and activities, but poor choices and behavior could warrant losing these privileges.
It is a joy to walk into the classrooms and see the students collaborating with each other and taking control of their own learning. We are trying to promote a growth mindset, which praises effort rather than the results. We certainly want all students to be successful, but studies show that students who are praised for their effort, are more willing to try difficult tasks and less likely to quit when the work gets hard.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding academics, please contact your child’s teacher. Also, please contact the front office if you have a change in a phone number so we can update your emergency contact information.
Mr. Pagano, Assistant Principal
Pine Grove P.R.I.D.E.
Polite, Responsible, In control, Do your best, Earn & give respect
Please remind your child to make good choices and to show Pine Grove P.R.I.D.E. while at school! When students show their P.R.I.D.E., they earn P.B.I.S. coins to spend at the P.B.I.S. store. The store is open later this month and teachers will take their students at a scheduled time on February 12 – 15.

Happy Valentine's Day to all or Pre-K families. We hope you are looking forward to a fun February. We know we are! This month, the students will go to see Jack Hartman live at Central high School. We are so, so excited! Also, this month, your child will have some sort of valentine celebration, so, please look for information from your child's teacher. As always, the students are working hard on all their Pre-K readiness skills. We can't believe the 100th day has come and gone already. During these last 80 days we ask you to work diligently with your child to help prepare them for kindergarten. We will work very hard in the classroom to ensure the success and growth.
Wow, the third quarter is going by so quickly. The students dove right back into their learning. In math, we have started addition and subtraction and counting to 75. In reading, we are learning digraphs and blends, practicing our fluency skills and learning sight words. We have 3 field trips coming up: Jack Hartmann Concert at Central High School Theatre, Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park, and The Wizard of Oz play at Springstead Theatre. Please remind your child to be on their best behavior as field trips are a privilege. Please keep a lookout for information about a Valentine’s Day Celebration in your child’s agenda. We are looking forward to all the fun activities and learning gains this quarter!
Flourishing First Graders
Our first graders are in for some fabulous fun this February! We are getting to meet the Tampa Bay Lighting Hockey team on the 6th, celebrating our wonderful friendships on the 14th, and seeing Jack Hartman LIVE in concert on the 21st at Central High School! All this fun will also come with lots of learning. We are taking our 2nd iReady diagnostic, so if your child doesn’t have working headphones at school please send them in with a pair. We are working hard towards our goal of reading 60 words per minute with an on-level text and mastering the weekly sight words, which are essential for this. We are learning to add and subtract two-digit numbers with some regrouping. This is a HUGE skill to grasp, but also very important for their future success! We are almost ¾ of the way through 1st grade! We are so thankful to have the opportunity to educate and influence these smart cookies! Thank you for all you do!
Sensational Second Graders
In reading, we have been examining different versions of the same story from different cultures. We compared "The 3 little pigs" to "The 3 little Dassies." We wrote in-depth reports and illustrated the stories. We are studying additional fables and folk tales, including Aesop stories. In social studies, we have begun studying presidents and patriots. In math, we have branched out to subtraction with regrouping and establishing numbers in the hundreds, tens, and ones columns. In science, we are comparing and describing changing patterns in nature that repeat themselves, such as weather conditions, including temperature and precipitation, day to day, and season to season. Finally, we keep group problem solving.
Terrific Third Graders
Third grade will be planning a parent night for next month and we are very excited to share this event with you! Keep a look out for the date and time. We are coming close to the end of the 3rd quarter (March 12) and with that we will be focusing on many new concepts and we will review many concepts we have already learned. In ELA, we will focus on text features: index, glossary, title page, captions, maps, bullet points, etc., sequencing (order within the text), and cause & effect. In math, we will continue elapsed time, fractions, writing fractions, modeling fractions, and comparing fractions on the number line and using models. Have an enjoyable Leap Year!
Fantastic Fourth Graders
Fourth Graders will be learning about Florida's limerock industry and its contribution to Florida's economy during field trips scheduled for Thursday and Friday, February 5th and 6th. In ELA, students are continuing to learn about explorers and writing opinion and informational essays. Science students are studying earth surfaces, the three types of the rock cycle, weather, erosion, deposition, renewable and non-renewable resources.
Formidable Fifth Graders
Happy February! This year is flying by. We are working so hard right now getting ready for FSA. In math, we are working on multiplying and dividing fractions. Kids are struggling with when to simplify (regular fraction) and when to divide out (improper fraction). We know there is a lot for the kids to remember; please make sure they are completing homework and reviewing. Please continue to work on math facts. It is easy to make computation mistakes with multi step problems. In science, we are finishing up the solar system. Our next unit will be the human body, plants, and animals. We are reviewing previously taught standards to prepare for Science FCAT. In ELA, we are reading texts about Thomas Jefferson. We are looking at character traits we can use to describe him. Each ELA class is reading a different novel. Please ask your child to tell you about the characters, setting, and plot. We are reviewing informative and opinion writing. Kids should be comfortable with unlocking the prompt and completing the writing graphic organizer. We are about two months from the start of testing, so this is a busy and stressful time of year! We look forward to seeing our families on Friday, February 7th, as we make our candy solar system. We also have our last dance of the school year on Friday, February 14th. We thank you for your continued support. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to any of us!
