First Day FAQs

Parents, please put your child’s first and last name on lunchboxes, jackets, school bags, dance shoes, water bottles, etc. If a child loses something and their name is on it, they are sure to get it back. If their name is not on the item, it will go to “Lost and Found”. If it is not claimed by the student, it will be donated to a local charity.
If you have not turned in your emergency information form, please do so as soon as possible. If there is a change in address, phone number or emergency contact/pick up, the legal custo-dian must physically come into the front office to make those changes. Remember to bring your legal ID.
It is very important to our school community that the learning environment is protected from interruption. We would like to stress the importance of communicating changes in routine BEFORE they go to school. Send a written note with plenty of notice when there is a change in pick up or an appointment. Please do NOT make it a habit to call the school frequently to communicate this to the child and teacher since there can be room for error.
**If your child does not have a note, or the front office was not notified, your child will follow their normal dismissal procedure!**
If you need to pick your child up early for an appointment, you must arrive at school before 2:00PM.
Early release days are from 8:35am-12:10pm. School will be released three hours earlier than normal on every early release day. Please see for a calendar.
Students may not be dropped off before 8:05am and should be picked up before 3:40 pm as supervision is not provided until then. The California Street entrance gate will be locked from 8:00-8:45 a.m. and again from 2:30-3:45 p.m. for traffic and safety reasons. All traffic must use the Powell Road entrance during these times.
Parents and family may not eat lunch at school with students until the THIRD week of school. During the first two weeks of school, procedures are being established and students need con-sistency with their schedule. When meeting your child for lunch, you will first check in through the front office, and then meet your child in the courtyard. Parents are not allowed in the cafete-ria, as this is a safety concern! Once you meet your child, you may take them to eat in the picnic area (by the 5th grade fountain) or in the tap room (next to the dance room). No one is permitted to eat in the courtyard or outdoor stage area. You must eat in the designated areas. Visitors are NOT allowed to invite other students to eat with them; only their child.
Parents of all students in 1st-5th grade may walk their child/children to class on the first day of school ONLY. Parents may walk their kindergarten child to class for the first two days. NO parents will be allowed on campus during drop-off after these specified days through the remainder of the school year. We will have plenty of staff on campus to assist students when needed.
Uniform tops and bottoms are required Monday-Thursday. On Fridays, students may wear a uniform top and uniform bottom or their grade-level spirit shirt with uniform bottoms or blue jeans. Students may wear regular clothing that fits the Hernando County School District’s dress code policy on early release days. Students can wear their grade level spirit shirt when attend-ing field trips. For specific information regarding uniforms, please see the Uniform Specifics handout.
Each student is obligated to have regular and punctual attendance for the best success.
A note is required within 3 days of an absence in order to excuse a child from school. A student who has been absent 7 or more days in a grading period or has a pattern of non-attendance may, upon the request of administration, be required to provide an original certificate of illness from a licensed physician (see the School Procedures Handbook for more details on the HCSD website at
Grades will be issued as follows for attendance:
9 Weeks: S=0 unexcused absences, N=1 to 4 unexcused, U=5 or more unexcused
End of Year: S=0 unexcused absences, N=1 to 12 unexcused, U=13 or more unexcused.
ALL parents (even school board employees) must submit a volunteer application online each and every school year. Only approved volunteers may attend field trips and work with students. Please see the Hernando County School Board website for complete policy information.
