Fox Chapel Middle School Dress Code 2024 - 2025

DRESS CODE: The following procedures are established to promote discipline, maintain order and provide a healthy environment conducive to academic purposes. Students are required to wear appropriate clothing and shoes according to the situation and the grade level involved. Inappropriate clothing and appearance are disruptive to the school program. Principals will enforce adherence to the dress code by those under their jurisdiction. School administrators have final authority to decide if clothing complies with district rules.

A. Weather Protective Wear – Students will be allowed to wear sunglasses, hats or other sun protective items while outdoors during and engaged in school related activities such as physical education or recess. No head coverings or sunglasses (unless prescribed by a physician) are to be worn inside the school building. Hoods are not to be worn at any time on campus.

B. Pants – Pants are to be worn at the waist, not below the waist or in such a way to expose undergarments or body parts in an indecent or vulgar manner or in a manner that disrupts the orderly learning environment. All pants and shorts must be neat, free of holes, rips, patches, frays, mesh, or other disruptions in the fabric and must be appropriately fitted.

C. Shirts and Blouses – Must be long enough to remain tucked in at all times with no skin visible.

D. Shorts, Skirts, and Dresses – To determine if shorts are too short: while student is standing with arms fully extended at side of his/her leg, shorts should reach to the student’s fingertips. In other words, the longest finger should still touch material, not skin. Students may wear dresses and skirts that are knee length in the front and back.

E. Unacceptable Attire – Any apparel that is determined inappropriate, disruptive to the educational environment, profane, or offensive to good taste by principal or designee of the school such as but not limited to: clothing, accessories, or manner of which by virtue of color arrangement, trade mark, logo, graphic, or other attributes that denotes membership in a gang; advocates drugs, tobacco products, or alcohol; violence; sexual innuendo; profanity; or has caused disruption is prohibited. Unacceptable attire includes, but is not limited to:

  • spandex/bike shorts, short shorts, and boxer shorts
  • form fitted dresses or skirts
  • shirts and dresses with a neckline that dips below the line formed between the left and right armpit
  • bandanas and/or du rags (may not be worn, displayed, or carried onto campus)
  • flip flops, crocs, slides and/or slippers
  • fish net stockings
  • tattoos or other markings (must be covered)
  • wallet chains, dog chains, and spiked jewelry, accessories, etc. presenting a safety or health hazard
  • spaghetti straps, tank tops, crop tops, muscle shirts, and shirts with cut off sleeves
  • see through items
  • bedroom attire or pajama pants to include but not limited to: velour, fleece, seasonal and/or character prints (exception: specific school endorsed dress up days)
  • onesies, costumes, blankets, or tails (exception: specific school endorsed dress up days)

F. Footwear – Students must wear hard soled shoes that are safe and appropriate for the specific learning environment.

G. Leggings - Leggings may be only be worn with a shirt or top that reaches the fingertip of the longest finger extended when the arms are fully extended at the side of the student. A jacket or unzipped / unbuttoned shirt does not count as a top to meet this criteria. Tying an article of clothing about the waist does not meet the covering criteria either.
