Careers: Making Educated Decisions

For the past several years, we have had the priviledge to recieve grant funding from the Hernando County Education Foundation for our field trip program. The goal of the Careers: Making Educated Decisions program is to provide information and exposure to students enrolled in Endeavor and Discovery about various careers and the education and skills needed to obtain those careers. Students earn the opportunity to attend trips by demonstrating success in attendance, academics, and behavior – factors that correlate with credit-recovery, grade promotion, and high school graduation.

We schedule our field trips with local community partners, combining qualifying students from both programs. Each trip incorporates presentations directly related to careers and provides information that our students will need as they work towards graduating and entering the workforce. Students participate in hands-on activities such as cooking with the Withlacoochee Technical College School of Culinary Arts and fishing at the Bass Conservation Center. Some of our other trips include Cemex, Marchmen Technical College, Saint Leo University, and the Chinsegut Conservation Center.

The grant has become an integral part of our school culture and provides a PBIS reward to those students meeting academic, attendance, and behavior goals. Please contact Aimee Crisp crisp_a@hcsb.k12.fl.us for more information or if you are interested in becoming a partner!
