Keep Quality Teachers. Keep Students Safe. Keep Learning Forward

Teachers from DSPMS

Why Is It Needed?

     5 Reasons

  • Hernando County has relatively low property values and a steady decline in millage rates has left us behind.

  • There is a national teacher shortage and Hernando County needs to recruit and retain quality teachers. Hernando teacher salaries are below the state average but the teachers are not average and there is risk of losing them.

  • The school board committed to a School Resource Officer in every school but the state did not provide enough money to cover the cost. Upgrades in security devices and control of access are needed along with additional mental health services to keep our students safe.

  • The district is going in the right direction with an increase in graduate rates and successful programs for all students, including career and technical programs, and the additional resources will allow the expansion of those services.

  • Providing digital learning devices for all students and staff is critical for today’s education, especially in an age of expanding distance learning platforms.

How Much Will It Cost?

If you own a home worth $150,000 and receive the standard $25,000 homestead exemption, you will pay around $10 a month. One mill means you pay $1 for each $1,000 your property is valued annually by the property appraiser. If you don’t own any property, such as renters, you don’t pay property taxes.
