Dear Parents and Students,
As e-bike and electric rideable use increases among students, it’s important to stay informed and safe, especially around sidewalks, school zones, and pedestrian areas.
⚠️ Know the Law: Sidewalk Use and Electric Bikes
While standard e-bikes may be allowed on sidewalks in certain areas, electric dirt bikes and high-powered electric vehicles (750 watts or more) are not.
🚲 What’s Allowed on Sidewalks?
- Pedal-assist, max speed 28 mph, less than 750 watts may be permitted on sidewalks
- Riders must still yield to pedestrians, ride at a safe speed, and dismount in crowded areas to avoid unnecessary injury to themselves or others.
- Electric Dirt Bikes or any electric vehicle 750 watts or higher (often exceeding safe speeds) are not legal to operate on sidewalks.
- These are classified as motor-driven cycles in Hernando County and are subject to road-use regulations only.
To protect everyone on and around campus:
- Dismount and walk your e-bike or electric vehicle on school sidewalks, in parking lots, and near crosswalks.
- Maintain a safe speed near the school and always be aware of foot traffic.
- Use designated bike racks and never block walkways or entrances.
- Always wear a helmet (required for riders under 16).
- Obey all traffic signs and signals.
- Ride defensively and respectfully, especially near younger students or pedestrians.
- Know your equipment—if it’s over 750 watts, it’s not sidewalk-legal.
