The Students & Families in Transition team work closely to help the schools understand and meet the McKinney-Veto Act guidelines in supporting homeless children and youth. SFIT’s main focus is on the educational needs of students identified as homeless/transitional or pending identification due to residing in a temporary or transitional housing situation. SFIT works closely with children/youth, parents/guardians, and schools to ensure the educational stability for students. SFIT collaborates with community agencies and connect parents/guardians to available resources.

    • Increase McKinney-Vento Acts awareness in the school and community
    • Ensure identification of homeless students in the district 
    • Improve attendance and academic achievement
    • Provide services to unaccompanied homeless youth
    • Serve as a liaison between school, parents, students and community agencies to meet the educational needs of children and youth

    • Provide staff training and consultation on the McKinney-Vento Act and the identification of homeless students
    • Collaborate with school personnel
    • Provide school supplies, book bags and school uniforms
    • Coordinate school transportation for students to remain in their school of origin or neighborhood school
    • Provide family or unaccompanied homeless youth referrals to community agencies
    • Form partnerships with community agencies for identification and services for homeless students

    • Communicate with schools about students
    • Engage parents in student learning
    • Assist students in creating a path to graduation and post-secondary planning
    • Ensure unaccompanied homeless youths obtain the support necessary to graduate
