Hurricane Ian - School Closures

Brooksville - In preparation for the potential impact of Hurricane Ian to Hernando County, the local Emergency Operations Center has issued an emergency order establishing multiple shelters for those who will be evacuating from low-lying areas, mobile or manufactured homes.

In order to prepare schools as shelters, Hernando Schools will close all schools and district offices Tuesday, Sept. 27th. Schools and offices will remain closed through Friday.

The following HCSD sites will serve as shelters for Hernando residents:

  • Challenger K8 - Those with special needs and their families ONLY. 13400 Elgin Blvd, Spring Hill, FL 34609
  • Explorer K8 - General population and pets. 10252 Northcliffe Blvd. Spring Hill FL 34608
  • The Mining Association Enrichment Center - General population and is pet friendly. 800 John Gary Grubbs Blvd. Brooksville FL 34601

Shelters will open Tuesday at 9 AM.

Residents planning to shelter should bring:

  • If you plan to shelter with pets, bring pet food and crates.
  • Personal hygiene products
  • Single air mattresses. There may not be cots for everyone who shelters.
  • Special dietary foods and snacks. Meals will be provided by HCSD's Food & Nutrition Dept. They will not be able to accommodate special dietary needs.
